Street Photography: Law, Ethics, Morals and Best Practices

When I got back from Morocco a few months back, another Instagram user posted photos of mine on Instagram. To be fair, this user did give me full credit but didn't seek permission ahead of time for using my photograph. So, I reached out to them to ask that they take the photo down (or compensate me for its use). The conversation took an interesting direction...

I've given this conversation a lot of thought over the past few months as it raises some interesting questions regarding the: law, ethics and morals of street photography. My thoughts have slightly changed since this conversation took place. However, I'd like to get your opinion on it. What do you think? Was I right to ask for the photo to be taken down? Is it unethical to make street photography for commercial purposes? Could I have approached this in another way? Give me your two-cents - I'd love to hear it in the comments below.
